LOCATION AND CLIMATE

Istria (Croatia) is Croatian largest peninsula located in the north of Adriatic sea. Istria has area of 2820 km2. It is located between mountains Cicarija on north and Ucka on east. Istra has around 200 000 inhabitants. Administrative center of Istria is town Pazin and economy center is Pula.

Climate in Istria is mild Mediterranean. It has around 2388 sunny hours a year. Winds that blow in Istria are bora and mistral. Average summer temperature is around 30 C.

Peninsula Istria has three rivers: Mirna, Rasa and Dragonja. Pula is the largest city and Hum is the smallest. Hum is also the world`s smallest town. Istria is divided on three parts by ground: Red, Grey and White Istria. Red Istria has red-brown ground, Grey Istria has grey clayey ground and White Istria has rocky ground.

Pula is the largest city in Istria. Pula has many monuments that come from Roman times. Arena is amphiteater, 5th largest in the world. Today it is used for film festivals and concerts. Triumph Arch and Temple of August were built at the time of emperor August.

HISTORY

There are foundings that show that there was life in this area in Prehistory (dinasours). Istria got its name by prehistorical inhabitants Histris. Many battles were led for Istria in history and many traditions passed through Istria, Roman, German, Slavic...

Romans occupied Istria in 177. B.C. In 789. Istria got under Frankish rule. From 1805. till 1813. Istria was under Napoleon. After World War I Istria was under Italians and Croats were compulsed to italianization. After World War II Istria became part of SFR Yugoslavia. Slaviczation is coming back. Istrians are leaving Italian names. In Fatherland War Istria was quarted of war. Today Istrian Democratic Parliament has authority.
